A one-off holiday
The state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II was held at Westminster Abbey on Monday 19 September 2022, and the day was declared a bank holiday across the whole of the UK by royal proclamation. It applied to that day only.

Not an entitlement
A bank holiday does not automatically give anyone the day off. Whether employees were paid depended on the wording of their contracts, and the government confirmed that employers were not obliged to close. In practice most did.

What closed
Shops, supermarkets and most services shut for the day, sporting fixtures were postponed, and hospitals ran a Sunday service. It was the first state funeral in the UK since that of Winston Churchill in 1965.

One-off holidays of this kind are rare but not unknown: recent examples include the royal wedding in April 2011, the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Platinum Jubilee in 2022, the coronation of King Charles III in 2023 and, in Scotland alone, the World Cup holiday in June 2026.
