Easter Monday: origins, the Easter weekend and Scotland

The second day of Easter
Easter Monday has no separate event behind it. It survives from the medieval practice of keeping the great church feasts over several days, originally a whole octave of eight. In Britain the Monday is what remained when the rest fell away.
One of the original four
Easter Monday was one of the four days named for England, Wales and Ireland in the Bank Holidays Act 1871, alongside Whit Monday, the first Monday in August and Boxing Day. It has been a fixture of the calendar ever since.
Not a holiday in Scotland
Scotland kept Good Friday but never adopted Easter Monday as a bank holiday, one of several points where the Scottish list diverges. Scots instead have 2nd January, the first Monday in August and St Andrew's Day.
The longest weekend of the year
With Good Friday on one side and Easter Monday on the other, Easter gives four consecutive days off without touching any annual leave, the longest such run in the UK calendar. Three days of leave either side turn it into ten.
A moveable date
Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March, so Easter Monday can fall anywhere between 23 March and 26 April. As a Monday it never needs a substitute day.
