Public holidays in the UK are generally referred to as bank holidays due to the days so designated by the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, four of them in England, Wales and Ireland and five in Scotland. The name is now used as a blanket term for all public holidays in the UK as banks, government offices and most businesses are closed on these days, although an increasing number of smaller shops and larger retail businesses remain open.
Public holidays in the United Kingdom comprise bank holidays set out in statute (Schedule 1 of the Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971), bank holidays appointed each year by royal proclamation (New Year's Day and the Early May bank holiday in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the Twelfth in Northern Ireland), and common law or customary holidays (Good Friday and Christmas Day, which are not official bank holidays in England, Wales and Northern Ireland). Royal proclamation is also used to move holidays that would otherwise fall on a weekend or that are moved for special occasions, or to create additional one-off holidays (such as for the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012).
When a bank holiday falls on a Saturday or a Sunday, the next available weekday becomes the day on which it is observed (known as a substitute day or a 'bank holiday in lieu'), which in both cases is normally the following Monday. If that Monday is itself a bank holiday, the substitute day moves on to the next weekday, which is why Christmas Day and Boxing Day can end up being taken on a Monday and a Tuesday. UK public holidays always move forward in the calendar, never backwards.
The August bank holiday always falls on the last Monday of August in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and on the first Monday of August in Scotland. Its official name is "Summer Bank Holiday", however it is far more commonly referred to as the "August Bank Holiday". This website therefore uses this more frequently-heard term.

Bank Holidays 2032 in England and Wales
England and Wales have eight bank holidays a year, among the fewest anywhere in Europe and the lowest count in the G20 group of leading economies, where the average is around twelve. Unlike in Scotland and Northern Ireland, neither England's national saint's day, St George's Day on 23 April, nor Wales' national saint's day, St David's Day on 1 March, is a bank holiday.

Bank Holidays 2032 in Scotland
Scotland has nine bank holidays in a normal year. Six of the nine fall on the same day as in England and Wales: Easter Monday is not kept in Scotland at all, and the summer bank holiday is taken on the first Monday in August rather than the last. To those Scotland adds 2nd January and St Andrew's Day on 30 November, in honour of its national saint, which has been a bank holiday since 2007. Schools and businesses in Scotland are not automatically closed on a bank holiday.

Bank Holidays 2032 in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland has ten bank holidays, the most of any part of the UK. It keeps all eight of the days kept in England and Wales, and adds St Patrick's Day on 17 March, in honour of Ireland's national saint, and the anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne of 1690 on 12 July, also known as "The Twelfth" and Orangemen's Day.
